The Sakamana Peanut Project

The peanut project provides contractual work for these two dear ladies

Back in 2023, Sakamana started offering a small bag of peanuts for each student to receive. Sakamana is a before-school nutrition program. Each decision that we make regarding what is served to the students passes through this filter - “Does it offer the students additional protein or vitamins to the students’ diet?”

Not only are peanuts a protein powerhouse for the students, but they also follow an incredible chain of support through our community. The peanuts (or groundnuts as they are called in Zambia) are grown by small-scale farmers. Women purchase the ground nuts from farmers, shell the peanuts, and then sell them in the market. The next step is the ladies who purchase the ground nuts, roast them, and then package the nuts into small plastics for the students. Then, Sakamana purchases the nuts from our partners.

Two of the ladies are young, single girls who are working hard at saving money for their future. Several of the ladies are single mothers with children to support.

Supporting our community through the peanut project should never be underestimated. Not only do the students benefit, but this incredible chain of commerce is something that we are incredibly proud of facilitating.

Thank you to all of our Sakamana partners who ensure that the peanut project flourishes.
